There are numerous small beaches that are accessible from the part of the town that was originally a fishing port. The older part was constructed around a castle and a fortified church, known locally as the Castell d'Aro.

The municipality of Play de Aro lies on the Costa Brava, facing the Mediterranean Sea, about half an hour from the popular, bustling resort of Lloret de Mar. It is an hour and a half from Barcelona's busy airport and a similar distance from the French city of Perpignan across the Pyrenees. It only takes around 80 minutes by car to reach Barcelona's city centre with its many bars, shops and restaurants, so the location is ideally suited to people seeking a relaxed way of life with good, local shops but where you are never too far away from the action.
